It was only later when I found out that it was first a 70's buddy cop series. Perhaps I'm not too familiar with "Starsky and Hutch", but I feel that "Abunai Deka" is more like "Miami Vice", especially in terms of the guys' fashion.

Ah yes, Atsuko Asano's kooky character, Kaoru. She really brings in the humour with her over-the-top persona and outrageous dressing. It always amazes me that she could make this "Kaoru" so flippant and silly, and the other "Kaoru" from "101st Proposal" so grounded and elegant.Noelle Thamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02869350840856391942noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2501670448657416824.post-40099262284424940892016-07-25T13:50:24.729-04:002016-07-25T13:50:24.729-04:00Quintessentially 80s is right. I was half-expecting a Raymond Chandler monologue to come in.

Running seems to be one of the many classic tropes when it comes to a Japanese cop show. It seems that a lot of TV police officers in Tokyo won't pass muster unless they can pull off an Olympic-level dash to catch the perps. :) The other trope is that the officers can only have either one of two facial expressions: stone-faced or wildly determined.

I've only seen a few of the "Abunai Deka" episodes but my impression is that it was a riff off of the old "Starsky & Hutch" series from the US. The regular police captain regularly suffered the wacky antics by Shibata and Tachi just like in the American show. But I have to say that the Japanese guys dressed much more stylishly.

The one other character I remember from "Abunai Deka" was the sexy but oddball lady played by Atsuko Asano. Into the 90s, she started going really serious in her acting but in "Abunai Deka" and her commercials, she was as goofy as Lucille Ball.J-Canuckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09551828383307840403noreply@blogger.com
