A really big No. 1 at the top since "Oyoge! Taiyaki-kun", the children's song about an escaped Japanese pastry managed to become the most successful tune in Oricon history, a record that it apparently still holds to this day. The No. 2 of the year, "Beautiful Sunday" had a little less than half of the sales that the Taiyaki got.

Still, there were plenty of worthy songs in the Top 10. The No. 3 song and the top enka song of the year by Harumi Miyako is a wistful and bittersweet tune of a woman who's lost her man, and "Momen no Handkerchief" by Hiromi Ohta is an evergreen favourite that often gets on those TV retrospectives on kayo kyoku. Momoe-chan's "Yokosuka Story" was another classic and coming up at No. 10 was this bossa-tinged tune by the daughter of a Tokyo draper. I wonder whatever happened to her.

  1. Apparently there is a Japanese version of Beautiful Sunday. I have heard it at Hawaii-style Obon festivals - like this https://youtu.be/BFeGoPgtOxY

    1. Hi, AL. Thanks for your comments. By chance, are you from Hawaii itself? I have a good friend who hails from the Aloha State. If I'm not mistaken, I think the band Godiego did their own cover version of the Boone hit.

  2. I am from California. California's Obons have somewhat different song selection and rarely include this song. This is more of Hawaiian tradition.
