Toshiyuki Honda -- My Memories

My first article for saxophonist and arranger Toshiyuki Honda(本多俊之)was for his truly peppy opening theme for the TV Asahi nighttime news program "News Station". For a show that aired nightly at 10 p.m., you would think that his 1989 "Good Evening" had been meant as an "up-and-at-'em" song for the morning.

(30:25)

Well, a decade earlier in 1979 when Honda released his second album "Opa! Com Deus", it was a completely opposite affair when he created the track "My Memories". It sounds like a morning tune but as a holiday Sunday morning tune in which there is no need whatsoever to wake up before 11 a.m. Just take your time, have breakfast in bed, read the newspaper and then gradually decide what to do with your day (probably nothing, aside from having lunch).

According to the King Records site, "Opa! Com Deus" included some of the members from Sergio Mendes' "Brasil '88" album from the previous year. So, perhaps bassist Nathan East and saxophonist Ernie Watts were in there; I've seen their names quite a lot in other Japanese singers' albums.
