As was the case last week with Yutaka Oe's（大江裕）proud "Doronko Taisho"（泥んこ大将）, I also first heard this song by the band Official Hige Dandism（Official髭男dism）through NHK's telecast of "Nodo Jiman"（のど自慢）last weekend.
The participant who sang this particular song did it well enough so that I was interested in getting to know the original better. May I say that I wasn't disappointed at all. "Hyaku-juu-go-man Kilo no Film" (1.15 Million Kilometres of Film) is quite the ambitious title for a sweet and adorable pop/rock song about a young man already "filming" the story of his life with his one-and-only, warts and all, in his head although I think that he thinks that the warts will be kept to a minimum. Still, would like to know how he came up with that figure for the length of celluloid.
Written and composed by vocalist Satoshi Fujihara（藤原聡）, "Hyaku-juu-go-man Kilo no Film" was the opening track on Official Hige Dandism's first full album "Escaparade"（エスカパレード）from April 2018. It was never released as a single although a few tracks were, but according to J-Wiki, on the streaming services, the song was so popular that it actually hit No. 11 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 weekly chart. It was also used in a commercial for electronic parts manufacturer Rohm and was made into the theme song for the live-action movie adaptation of the manga "Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare"（思い、思われ、ふり、ふられ...Love Me, Love Me Not） from 2020. As for "Escaparade", it hit No. 15 on the Oricon weeklies.
Come to think of it, wouldn't "Hyaku-juu-go-man Kilo no Film" be the type of song that would be played at a marriage proposal or a wedding reception? One of my old friends actually serenaded his future wife under her window with another song, so it's certainly possible (not sure if his father-in-law-to-be rushed out with a knife, though). The tune also reminded me of an NBC show that's been going on for about six years now, "This is Us".
