I've been a fan of Japanese popular music for over 35 years, and have managed to collect hundreds of CDs during that time. So I decided I wanted to talk about Showa Era music with like-minded fans. My particular era is the 70s and 80s (thus the "kayo kyoku"). The plus part includes a number of songs and artists from the last 20 years and even some of the early stuff. So,let's talk about New Music, aidoru, City Pop and enka. (Sorry but music163 is now dead so ignore those links.)
I would like to give credit where credit is due. Videos are from YouTube and other sources such as NicoNico while Oricon rankings and other information are translated from the Japanese Wikipedia unless noted.

Asami Kado -- Season
Probably out of all of the singles from the Greta Garbo of kayo kyoku, my favourite is this one, "Season", her 4th single released in September 1980. Written and composed by Asami Kado （門あさ美）herself, it has that congenial twang to it which reminds me a bit of American country singer Crystal Gayle. Although three of her albums have been put up on "Japanese City Pop", （already profiled under "Media")I think "Season" is just a straight-up pop ballad. The song is also a track on Kado's third album, "Semi-Nude" which was released the following year in July. It went as high as No. 16 on the Oricon weeklies.
