Miho Gomi -- Namima ni Kieta Omoide(波間に消えた想い出)

A few years ago, I wrote about a singer-songwriter named Miho Gomi(五味美保)who may not have become a huge superstar but I found her debut quite interesting. When I wrote about "Natsu no Owari..."(夏の終わり…), I had been expecting something rather calming and wistful but the song was actually quite the upbeat banger.

My expectations have been upturned once again with another song by Gomi. "Namima ni Kieta Omoide" (Memories Fading Among the Waves) is a tune that I had assumed would be a rich piano-laden melancholy ballad about a romantic affair doomed to become part of the past. The piano is indeed in there but the melody and arrangement are actually adorably sing-songy, almost on an aidoru level. If there had been a music video for "Namima ni Kieta Omoide", it wouldn't be a lonely girl walking along the shoreline; there would be kids happily playing in the surf to this song. As with "Natsu no Owari..."Kouki Ikenaga(池永康記)and Masayoshi Sugimura(杉村雅祥)took care of the lyrics and melody respectively. The song took its place as the second track on Gomi's debut album in June 1989, "Mind Holiday".

  1. The lyrics, tune, and the singers voice is upbeat and cheerful.
