UA -- Kumo ga Chigireru Toki (雲がちぎれる時)

"Kumo ga Chigireru Toki" (Til The Clouds Break) is a straight pop ballad of hope by UA. Released in November 1996, I was struck by the black-and-white video of just her face as she squeezed the emotions out of it. Her voice had that power but it still contained that soft edge while she sang about hoping for the sun to break through the gloom. Methinks her vocals alone could have done that.

Written by UA and composed by Hirofumi Asamoto(朝本浩文), "Kumo" sounds somewhat indie-ish without the R&B of some of her other songs at that time such as "Rhythm". I think it's one of those songs that would quieten the karaoke lounge in deference to any who sang it well. Her 6th single only rose as high as No. 73 on the Oricon weeklies, though, but was a part of her debut album, "11", which peaked at No. 3.
