Pink Lady -- Monster (モンスター)

Well, it's been quite a while since I've done a Pink Lady tune. And for that matter, I missed out on putting this up by about a week with Halloween, but I honestly thought I already had written it. In any case, "Monster" was Pink Lady's 8th single from June 1978.

Of course, I also have to embed an actual performance video of Mie and Kei doing the song since the duo was as much about the showmanship as it was the song. And once again, the disco aidoru melody by Shunichi Tokura(都倉俊一)is back to the fore while Yu Aku's(阿久悠)lyrics seem to hint that the monster of the song is apparently Dracula or some vampire that the ladies have to fight off with stuff like tomato juice. Then again, it might also be some drunken Pink Lady fanatic in need of a good orthodontist at a disco. Supposedly, the gruesome laugh at the beginning belonged to composer Tokura himself...I don't think Vincent Price is rolling in his grave, though, but good try.

The song reached No. 1 on Oricon and stayed there for almost 2 months. Not surprisingly, it would become the 3rd-ranked song for 1978. The only reason that it didn't grab status as the No. 1 song for the whole year was that it was beat by two other Pink Lady songs, "UFO" and "Southpaw". You can also take a look at the rankings for that year here.
