For some reason, I had never thought that chanteuse Taeko Ohnuki(大貫妙子)would ever do a Christmas song, despite the fact that her contemporaries such as former bandmate Tatsuro Yamashita(山下達郎), his wife Mariya Takeuchi(竹内まりや)and the Queen of New Music, Yumi Matsutoya(松任谷由実), have all come up with hit tunes for the Holidays. I guess it's perhaps because her music had gone off in a completely different direction that I had those doubts about her tackling anything with a Xmas bent.
Well, I was wrong. In 1991, when she released her 6th of 13 BEST albums, "Pure Drops", she included "Starry Night For You". Her voice had become more ethereal and her delivery was starting to become a bit more languid by that point, so this tune made for a nice fit with her. It's perfect music to contemplate that illuminated Xmas tree at night. And the 3-minute length makes the song short AND very sweet.
