Yoshimi Iwasaki -- Margarita Girl(マルガリータ・ガール)

Another one of those songs that I couldn't classify at first, "Margarita Girl" by Yoshimi Iwasaki(岩崎良美)is still a pretty refreshing cocktail of a tune. I gather that along with 1976, 1982 was a darn fine year for music since it's currently the year in Labels with the second-largest number of articles.

"Margarita Girl" was Iwasaki's 10th single from July 1982. One of three musical creations that year that had been made for the 80s aidoru by the husband-and-wife team of lyricist Kazumi Yasui(安井かずみ)and composer Kazuhiko Kato(加藤和彦), it starts off sounding a bit City Pop but then it transitions into a more old-fashioned pop standard direction with strings (maybe even a bit Fashion Music?). Moreover, some Latin feeling also infuses itself by the chorus. I guess it wasn't just the girl that was getting margarita-ized. You can ask arranger Nobuyuki Shimizu(清水信之).

The single managed to peak at No. 41 on Oricon. One of those other Yasui/Kato collaborations for Yoshimi was "Aishite Mon Amour"(愛してモナムール).

  1. Now, this is what I would call fancy-Aidoru-pop! Great song, arrangement, and Yoshimi has a nice dance to do along with it, too. And, a real Aidoru dress.

  2. Very underrated single, I'm really glad this got an article here! (people really seem to like "Vacance" a lot hence why they decided to make it a double A-side affair).

Though slight correction, "Margarita Girl" was never in "Cécile" (though "Vacance" was the album's opener). Here's a little fun trivia - in the planning stages of the single's creation, "恋・あなただけに" was meant to its B-side (there's an extremely rare promo version of the single with this configuration) but again due to the popularity of "Vacance" - it was later scrapped and instead became the B-side for her succeeding single, "化粧なんて似合わない".

    1. Hello, nothingmuch;) and thanks for the correction and trivia. When I saw the J-Wiki article on "Margarita Girl", I'd assumed that the song had been placed onto "Cécile" from what I saw on the usual right-hand box, but it turned out that the writers meant "Vacance".
