Yuko Shibuya -- Lady Madonna wa Mou Utawanai(レディ・マドンナはもう歌わない)

At this point, I've only been able to just scrape the thinnest layers of the discography of singer-songwriter Yuko Shibuya(渋谷祐子). Up to now, I've been able to check out her City Pop material through songs such as "Tokai no Ehon"(都会の絵本)from 1980 and then her earlier folksier time with her partner Masako Kuriaki(栗秋雅子)in the duo Do Do for songs including "Miyakowasure"(都忘れ).

"Lady Madonna wa Mou Utawanai" (Lady Madonna Won't Sing Anymore) was Shibuya's debut single after the breakup of Do Do. Released in September 1977, the song created by the singer with arrangement by Jun Sato(佐藤準), there is very much a wistful Miyuki Nakajima(中島みゆき)flavour in "Lady Madonna wa Mou Utawanai". Additionally, there is a folksy feeling within the song as well but I think Shibuya and Sato were also game for letting a little of the urban contemporary seep in through the instrumental passages, even at the very end with a certain chord change.

The first single was also the first track on Shibuya's debut album "Pop Lady" which came out on the same day as "Lady Madonna".

  1. This single was arranged by Jun Sato(佐藤準), not Ken Sato.
