Chiharu Matsuyama -- Hamabe(浜辺)

Been a while, Chiharu Matsuyama(松山千春)...good to see you again. With his track "Hamabe" (The Beach) from his 7th original album, "Toki wo Koete"(時代を超えて...Beyond Time)released in May 1981, we get to hear that distinctive resonant voice again.

With words and music by Matsuyama, "Hamabe" is quite the rollicking and dramatic serenade to that special woman. The lyrics seem to be summed up as a parody of a Shakespearian line: "Shall I compare thee to a beach?" instead of "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?". The music just chugs away like a well-oiled sports car driving along the coast. Quite a few famous session musicians were on hand on the album including trumpeter Shin Kazuhara(数原晋), guitarist Masaki Matsubara(松原正樹), and the sax solo on "Hamabe" is Jake H. Concepcion.

The song also reminds me of some of the energy in his "Jinsei no Sora kara"(人生の空から)from 1980.
