Satomi Kawai -- Tsukikage ~ SOINE CLUB(月影・SOINE・CLUB)

Over the years at "Kayo Kyoku Plus", we've had a few people going in different directions around the adult video industry who've also cut some records. For instance, the late Ai Iijima(飯島愛)had already left hardcore porn and was entering the TV world when she put out singles such as "Dear Joshi Kousei" (Dear 女子高生). Meanwhile, jazz chanteuse Kei Marimura(真梨邑ケイ)is someone I know for her scintillating "Etranger Break"(エトランゼ・ブレイク); later on, she would actually become a hardcore porn actress.

Yokohama-raised Satomi Kawai(かわいさとみ), whose birth name is not known, had a brief career in the geinokai from 1986 to 1992. She started out under the names of Miho Kitahara(北原美穂)and Mie Kitahara(北原美枝)before taking on her current stage name in 1987, and was known primarily as a pinup model and then an AV actress. Kawai also did a lot of late-night television including "All-Night Fuji"(オールナイトフジ).

Kawai also cut a few records...three singles and two albums, to be exact...during those six years. Her debut single, "Tsukikage ~ SOINE CLUB" (Moon Shadow), was released in September 1988. The song is an example of what I often found within the Golden Age of Aidoru during the 1980s: the voices were not the strongest but they were surrounded by some lush and/or interesting arrangements. And in this case, Pecker (try not to giggle considering the circumstances) was behind the melody and the arrangements for "Tsukikage" with the mysterious twanginess thanks to the bass, synths and percussion which almost takes things into spy territory. Nice backup chorus, too. I'd probably say that Kawai could have been categorized as an aidoru in terms of her soft and fluffy vocals but I guess at least one of her primary occupations at the time would have made things a tad awkward with that particular label of aidoru. Yuuho Iwasato(岩里祐穂)was responsible for the lyrics.

  1. The Japanese music industry is interesting some go from aidoru to pin up and AV but others like Izumi Sakai of Zard when from real estate, promotional model (as well as aNissin race queen), to being the lead singer of a best selling J-pop group on the 1990's. And, again we have another mystery as to the real name of Satomi Kawai...

    1. I always respected that if someone did not want to be a public figure anymore in Japan, they could disappear without people trying to find out their whereabouts.

    2. It's pretty nice that up to a certain level, if a celeb wants to disappear into civilian life, then they could do so without too much hassle. I'm hoping that even Momoe Yamaguchi has achieved some security that way finally.

    3. Hello, Brian. It was quite the journey up the ladder for the late Ms. Sakai. It's too bad that it ended so early and tragically for her.
