Chickenshack -- The Future Funk

This would come down as one of the weirder coincidences but I did encounter "Chickenshack III" by the fusion group Chickenshack that has different tracks "Perfume" and "The Future Funk". Immediately, my memories went back to that scene in the Fox cartoon "American Dad" when a robotized Stan tells his wife about this Japanese future funk that was all the rage and it turned out to be Perfume's "Monochrome Effect"

But "The Future Funk" on "Chickenshack III" from 1987 has nothing to do with Vaporwave variants or a certain technopop trio. It's a funky strut fest that seems to straddle the line between a Prince-ly tune and the title track from Quincy Jones' "The Dude". For the most part, "The Future Funk" keeps on funking along its pace aside from a sudden crystalline synth that crashes in a little over midway while the vocalists are having a party where the listeners are invited.

  1. Yeah, it's pretty wild that a J-Pop tune would end up on a Seth McFarlane series! "The Simpsons" followed suit with a Kyary Pamyu Pamyu song for one episode.

Chickenshack sure knows how to lay down the funk!

  2. Hello, Brian. Yeah, "The Simpsons" got their origins on "The Tracy Ullman Show" all the way back in the late 1980s. Never would have thought that the show would go on this long but to be honest, I think their best days are now long behind.

As for that Kyary Pamyu Pamyu reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CELlRqYm0rg
