I figured that it would be sometime this week that NHK would do it, but indeed earlier today, the national network announced the lineup for the 73rd Kohaku Utagassen. In an earlier blog entry this year, I had wondered whether the reformist-minded top 2 fellows would be swinging the axe at this venerable New Year's Eve special that has been around since the middle of the 20th century since they were willing to chop down a few shows that had been on NHK for decades. But it's back on and to be honest, I think that the board probably had to face the question of what else to put on in that huge 4-hour-and-25-minute hole that would appear on the December 31st schedule. As 2022 went by though, I figured that the show was returning, especially when "Uta Con"(うたコン)returned to the revamped NHK Hall in Shibuya, Tokyo and showed off its new bells and whistles.
Anyways, here is the lineup for No. 73.

It will be nice to see Ryoko Shinohara(篠原涼子)and Superfly, Kinki Kids and Shizuka Kudo(工藤静香)again. I'm also looking forward to hearing Misia and Masayuki Suzuki(鈴木雅之)once more. I only heard about Vaundy within the last few weeks, and I've liked what I've heard so far so definitely anticipating his contribution. There will be some poignancy since both one member of Junretsu(純烈)and enka singer Kiyoshi Hikawa(氷川きよし)will be leaving singing for a while at least. Junretsu's Ryohei Odai(小田井涼平)will be going solo in some undetermined fashion in show business while Hikawa is taking a break.
What the participants will sing on stage will probably be known sometime in the next few weeks, most likely into December. If any of you have any feelings on this lineup and/or, for that matter, any dashed hopes, please let us know. Also, I figure that there will be some last-minute surprises in store.
P.S. The songs that the participants will be singing have now been announced on Tokyo Hive.
No surprises with the selections. This is the first year since 2011 that we have three K-pop groups joining(TWICE, IVE and LE SSERAFIM) although all three groups have Japanese members.
ReplyDeleteActually, I'm surprised that Fujii Kaze wasn't invited. He's had a really good year(released his sophomore album, one of his songs "Shinunoga E-Wa" went viral on TikTok and brought him a bigger international audience). Maybe he declined. I hope you'll cover more of his songs on your blog, they would be up your alley.
Hi there and thanks for your comments. I've heard of TWICE but the other two are new to me. I was kinda hoping that there were more solo singers like Kaze coming on board, but yeah, it's possible that NHK's feelers out to them were rebuffed. I'm glad that Vaundy is up there, though.
DeleteAlong with "Shinunoga E-Wa", are there any other Kaze songs that you can recommend?
Sure! I recommend "Kirari," "Matsuri," Kaerou,"damn" and "grace(which is his newest song)."
Delete"Matsuri" certainly sounds good...kinda of a mix between traditional festival music and Neo-City Pop.
Delete42 entries in four hours. 42 was already a lot for the Showa-era editions, such a shame NHK couldn't put more.
ReplyDeleteI think they should go back to them inviting as many artists as they can so we'll have like 50 performers with names that might only end up popping up once.
Hi, Jenard. Thanks for your comments. I figure that the lineup above is probably the bare bones and that they may put in a few surprises such as a group performance which would pack the show like a rush-hour train in Tokyo.
DeleteOh, Jenard. I forgot to ask. How's your proposal for a Kohaku performance at your local anime convention coming along?
DeleteI haven't formally made any pitching yet, though I'll say if I ever do spitball that however that would be.
DeleteAlso I say that cause recent past editions have more or less have barely above 40 main entries, so I won't be surprised if this roster sticks.
