I guess that another one of those fine instrumental ingredients in a good City Pop song would be that light-fingered piano dancing to a Latin beat.
And indeed, that's what I hear in Miki Matsubara's(松原みき)"Chandelier Mirage", a track from the late singer's 6th album "REVUE" from September 1983. Of course, I can't forget to mention the boppy bass as well. Written by Shun Taguchi(田口俊), composed by Ginji Ito(伊藤銀次)and arranged by Tetsuji Hayashi(林哲司), "Chandelier Mirage" works in the daytime as well as at night, as Matsubara sings about the search for that mysterious Chandelier Mirage. Not sure if she's referring to some spy with a pretty bizarre code name or a particular brand of eye shadow (no mention of it being tied up with some cosmetics commercial in J-Wiki), but the song sounds all sorts of sophistication in the big city.
As for "REVUE", it managed to get as high as No. 73 on Oricon. Have that glass of champagne while listening to this one.
