Tani Yuuki -- W/X/Y

Earlier this year, NHK's "Uta Con"(うたコン)invited singer-songwriter Tani Yuuki to sing his hit "W/X/Y". I'd never heard of him before but when he performed the song, my impression was that he's got that modern-day balladeer vibe to him so he had me sold, and besides, I'm a sucker for a good rollicking pop piano.

But as his history via sites such as J-Wiki has said, his career in music had been sparked by his grandfather giving him an acoustic guitar back in his junior school days. Thereafter came some band work and then an official debut as a singer in 2020. Tani's 5th single is the song that I just mentioned "W/X/Y" which was released in May 2021 as a digital download. The unusual title is a meshing of the female (WX=XX) and male (XY) chromosomes and the lyrical theme is about how men and women get along with each other.

Through the laidback melody by Tani, his lyrics admit that not every time will be rosy and wonderful but he's encouraging couples that things will be happy enough for them to stay together in domestic bliss. "W/X/Y" hit No. 3 on Billboard Japan's Hot 100 (as well as becoming the No. 2 song of the year) and via streaming, it was played 300 million times.
