Like over in America and Canada, Coca-Cola in Japan has had its many jingles attributed to it with the one most well-known to me being the dynamic "I Feel Coke" in the late 1980s as created by Daisuke Inoue(井上大輔).
But I was surprised to find out that Chiharu Matsuyama's(松山千春)affecting ballad "Sing a Song" was actually associated with a Coke campaign back in 1983. All these years, I've been seeing and hearing "Sing a Song" by the man on television without being aware of its cola connection.
Coke aside, "Sing a Song" is a masterfully sung pop/folk ballad that has me thinking more about life and years gone by rather than one of the world's most popular drinks. It was released as Matsuyama's 14th single in March 1983 and it stands as his last single to get into the Top 10 by ranking in at No. 7 with 200,000 records sold. With Keiichi Oku's(奥慶一)arrangement overseeing Matsuyama's words and music, his inclusion of strings, a romantic saxophone and that wailing 80s electric guitar, "Sing a Song" may indeed have Coke drinkers thinking of life. It ended the year as the 61st-ranked single.
This is a nice find! I have always wondered who wrote and performed the songs for Coke CM's in Japan. After reading this article I am know feeling like I want to drink a Coke! Since I arrived in Japan I have been drink tea far more than any other type of drink other than water.
ReplyDeleteCoca-Cola is something that I rarely drink anymore but not necessarily out of choice. It's just that my parents don't buy the stuff anymore; they're strictly Canada Dry or Sprite people.
